Hello dear readers!
As the soft glow of the full moon illuminates the sky, the schoolyard of China International School in Cape Town comes alive with the chatter and excitement of children, their hands clutching brightly lit lanterns, ready to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Known as 中秋节 (Zhōngqiū Jié) in Mandarin, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most significant festivals celebrated across many East Asian communities. The festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar when the moon is believed to be at its roundest and brightest. This event symbolizes unity, prosperity, and the gathering of family and friends.
Originating from ancient Chinese traditions of moon worship, the Mid-Autumn Festival carries with it several delightful customs, from moon-gazing to the consumption of the delicious mooncakes. These delectable pastries come with a variety of fillings, each encapsulating the rich heritage and flavors of the festival.
Here at China International School in Cape Town, we ensure that our students understand and cherish their cultural roots, no matter how far they are from their homeland. Our celebration involves an amalgamation of traditional customs and the zest of young spirits. With lantern-making workshops, storytelling sessions about the legendary Moon Goddess Chang'e, and mooncake tasting events, our students are immersed in the festive spirit.
However, the beauty of our diverse community is that while we share our traditions, we also embrace the local culture of Cape Town. This unique blend creates a festival experience unlike any other, as our students also introduce their South African friends to the wonders of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
As the moon rises tonight, our school community would like to extend our heartfelt wishes to everyone. May this Mid-Autumn Festival bring happiness, good health, and prosperity to all. Let the radiant moonlight remind us of the beauty of togetherness, even when we're miles apart.
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to one and all! 🌕
Warmly,
Students & Faculty,
China International School, Cape Town
